Hortus

Hortus is the title of the original work of documentation and photographic reworking where the protagonists are the gardeners and the social gardens of Sassuolo and Fiorano. The peculiarity of this investigation consists in having been carried out in winter, a time when the gardens are certainly not lush with vegetables, although there are various preparatory activities for sowing in which the care and organization of the land is of extreme importance. Divided into fertile rectangles or squares, delimited by the borders of axes and walkways, as they have been “portrayed” by the artist, they almost seem like compositional quotations from Mondrian or Paul Klee.

And as usual, in the garden, as a “last resort”, materials and objects discarded in the family environment also flow together, so old shoes and boots, slippers and boots, tools, planks and pieces of wood, buckets, bottles and bins, in the garden in fact begin a new life, in addition to being witnesses of an increasingly necessary ecological ethic. “From a cultural point of view, the Hortus work has the main merit of giving artistic dignity to things that are a bit neglected, derelict, marginal, without glory and splendor as, ultimately, winter gardens are” (D.Vesprini)
